NMEA0183 Overview

NMEA0183 is a sentence-oriented serial path. It is not selected by choosing a CAN adapter, and its sentence coverage must be checked independently of NMEA2000 PGNs.

Configure serial input/output

  1. Stop Sending, then open Setup → NMEA0183.
  2. Enable the path and select the actual port and baud configuration appropriate to the connected equipment.
  3. Save deliberately. A nonexistent or busy port requires connection recovery, not another sentence widget.
  4. Use Viewer to inspect supported RX, or Generate to configure supported sentence instruments.

Use the real device's specification for wiring/electrical levels and baud rate. A USB serial name alone does not prove that RS232, RS422/NMEA0183 or CAN wiring is compatible. Do not connect incompatible electrical interfaces based on the appearance of a port in Setup.

Generate a supported sentence

  1. Choose the sentence instrument from its category after the numerical PGN entries.
  2. Populate supported fields manually, or use an existing compatible generator mapping.
  3. Inspect units, navigation status and identifiers. Do not infer automatic APB/RMB generation for every field.
  4. Enable the instrument and choose a suitable interval, then explicitly Enable Sending on the configured output.
  5. Inspect the independent receiver and stop deliberately.

The sentence reference lists all 18 supported formatters and their RX/TX fields and limits. Choose the formatter needed by the receiver; NMEA2000 PGN support is a separate list.

Interpret failures

Check port access and baud first, then sentence type, checksum/framing, supported fields and receiver expectations. A valid unavailable date/time should not become a plausible invented date. Logical TX log entries describe submissions, not guaranteed delivery on the wire.
