Instruments and Generators
An instrument owns supported message properties and its individual Enable/reporting interval. A generator is an optional source of changing values. They are not interchangeable widgets.
Add an instrument
- Choose Generate mode and the appropriate category.
- Open Select … Item and choose the PGN or NMEA0183 instrument. Numerically ordered PGNs precede sentence entries.
- Answer any source or instance prompt. Multiple engine instances must remain distinct.
- Edit supported fields and inspect canonical properties. Configure Enable and interval before an external test.
Manually entered properties are sufficient for supported TX. See the PGN and sentence references for available fields and directions.
Connect a generator source
- Add a compatible source from Generate. Generator-before-instrument and instrument-before-generator are both supported creation orders.
- Review optional Engine or Transmission source prompts rather than assuming Yes is mandatory. Answering No preserves independent supported bindings.
- Enable the source and Dispatch only when you want its genuine samples to update compatible properties.
- Match engine/other instances. Two sources with different instances should not be treated as duplicates.
Generators update compatible instrument properties when their instances match. Add a source before or after its instruments. Removing it disconnects its updates; saved values remain until another source or received message updates them.
Receive and distinguish instruments
Viewer can discover supported instruments automatically from incoming messages and update matching source/instance identities. It does not create generator sources from RX. Two Date/Time or System Time widgets from different sources can be correct. Use Object Tree receive-source information and Diagnostics to identify them before removing one.
Unavailable means that a usable measurement is missing. Keep it distinct from a valid zero. When simulating a received snapshot, choose which fields remain manual and which generators may update them.
